Perhaps the fault is with your vision and not the books. [Maybe he should be in the backroom instead of at the front with customers?! But he will, at least, follow that smarmy remark up with something marginally helpful:]

If you can find magnifying lenses, it may help. Otherwise, you'll simply have to make your choices based on how worn the book looks on the outside. [He tips his head toward the front.] The newer ones are that way.
